Back in the late seventies that was the way all those high-steel guys were. Casually defying death at high altitudes was a game for them.

As a land surveyor who does construction (and a guy who hates heights) I occasionally had to work in their environment and every time I did I was terrified into near-paralysis, yet they’d be stepping here and there all around me as nonchalantly as if they were on a sidewalk on the safe, solid ground. Of course their profession’s death rate was out the roof (many times higher than that of police officers or Pick-Kwik cashiers, for two examples of high-fatality jobs), but it was their thing to act like they just didn’t care.

A couple of decades later I was told that I was supposed to go to a job site (in the rain!) and get hoisted up to some nine inch wide steel beams about fifty feet above the ground, and measure some distances up there with a steel tape. I debated whether I should quit my job right then and there, but I decided to drive to the job site and make up my mind there.

Imagine my relief when I was told that OSHA regulations now prohibited the untethered aerialist act I had previously seen those crazy bastards perform regularly; instead I was supposed to strap myself into a harness and run a steel cable around the beam I was walking on, so that if I slipped off I would only fall about ten feet before I was caught up. From my previous experiences with harnesses I knew that would be a quite painful jolt, but probably not fatal. Oh My God what a relief! and I got the measurements done too. Bless you OSHA, a thousand times bless you!

I posted that picture about a year ago, and somebody (probably McMike) photoshopped Chuck Norris’s head onto the guy in the background.
